Pasadena, Texas – An Overview

Pasadena City Harris County is located southeast of Houston in the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metropolitan area. Bounded by the Houston Ship Channel (Buffalo Bayou/ San Jacinto River) on the north, the southeastern most part of Pasadena overlooks the Galveston Bay. This second largest city in the county is lush with vegetation and is home to the popular annual Strawberry Festival, a celebration of the rich heritage of this city. Pasadena Livestock Show & Rodeo Events are major tourist attractions every year.

Pasadena boasts a rich cultural heritage and dates back in history as being the birthplace of free Texas. The largest all volunteer municipal fire department in the US, the Pasadena Volunteer Fire Department, is situated here. A thriving crop of strawberry in the early part of the 20th century gave the city the coveted nickname of “Strawberry Capitol of the World”.

Recreation areas and facilities in Pasadena are many, which includes parks, playgrounds, picnic spots, tennis courts, swimming, walking or jogging trails, museums and community centers. Rusk Recreation Center, Sherwood Recreation Center, Verne Cox Multipurpose Recreation Center are some facilities dedicated to providing fun-filled entertainment with a multitude of activity options they have to offer their visitors. East Harris County Activity Center and Bay Area Community Center are also located in Pasadena for engaging in community activities. The University of Houston – Clear Lake is located partly in Pasadena and partly in Houston. San Jacinto College also serves a part of Pasadena on the east. The Texas Chiropractic College located here is the third oldest in US. Primary and secondary schooling for children is provided by Pasadena Independent School District, Deer Park Independent School District, Clear Creek Independent School District and La Porte Independent School District. The Pasadena Independent School District is the fourth largest in Harris County. It comprises 5 high schools, 10 intermediate schools and 33 elementary schools besides private schools and preschools. Prominent community centers in the city include East Harris County Activity Center and Bay Area Community Center. San Jacinto Branch YMCA is also situated here.
