Baytown, Texas – An Overview

Baytown City Harris County  within Harris County and partially in Chambers County in the Gulf Coast region of the U.S. state of Texas. Located within the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown metropolitan area, it lies along both State Highway 146 and Interstate 10. As of the 2006 U.S. Census, Baytown had a total population of 78,311. It is the fourth-largest city within the metropolitan area.

The area of Baytown began to be settled as early as 1822. One of its earliest residents was Nathaniel Lynch, who set up a ferry crossing at the junction of the San Jacinto River and Buffalo Bayou. The ferry service that he started is still in operation today, now known as the Lynchburg Ferry. Other early residents of Baytown include William Scott, one of Stephen F. Austin’s Old Three Hundred, and Ashbel Smith, who owned a plantation in the area.

The city now known as Baytown was originally three separate towns. The first of these was Goose Creek, named for the bayou of the same name where Canadian Geese wintered and whose name is still reflected in the area’s Goose Creek CISD, whose establishment dates back to before 1850. This was followed by the rival communities of Pelly in the late 1910s, and East Baytown in the early 1920s.The “East” in East Baytown was later dropped because it was west of Goose Creek.

Serious talk of merging the three cities began shortly after World War I, but the community of Baytown was opposed to this idea. However, in 1947, the three cities finally agreed to consolidate. The citizens settled on the name Baytown for the new combined city. Baytown as it is known today was officially founded January 24, 1948.

In 1916, the Humble Oil & Refining Company, founded by one-time Texas governor Ross S. Sterling and his associates, built the first offshore drilling operation in Texas and the second in the United States. The company later built the Baytown Refinery, which would become one of the largest Exxon Refineries in the world. Since then, many other refineries have been built in the area. Exxon-Mobil is still one of the major employers in the city and now runs over ten plants in the area.

Steel manufacturing in Baytown began in 1970 when United States Steel opened the Texas Works near the city. The 48 inch seamless pipe used in the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System was produced at the facility’s pipe mill. The plant was officially closed in July 1986 (never reopening after a nationwide strike against the company), due to a poor economic climate and the decline of American steel in the 1980s.

Navasota, Texas – An Overview

Navasota City Grimes County is a city in Grimes County, Texas, United States. The population was 6,789 at the 2000 census. In 2005, the Texas Legislature named the city “The Blues Capital of Texas,” in honor of the late Mance Lipscomb, a Navasota native and blues musician.

Navasota is located on a bend of the Navasota River, near its junction with the Brazos River at the intersections of Highway 105 and Farm Roads 3090 and 1227. It sits approximately 25 miles south of Bryan-College Station. It is connected to those cities, as well as Waco and Houston, by State Highway 6.

The site was first named Hollandale for Francis Holland, who bought land in the area in 1822. In 1832 a Georgia planter named Daniel Arnold moved to the vicinity. Jim Bowie and his brother Rezin and other traders illegally transported wild horses, and Texas cattle to the Louisiana market on the La Bahia Trail, which came right through the town. No doubt Texas legends like Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston used the La Bahia Trail, as it led to and through their neighborhoods. In 1848 James Nolan set up a judgeship in some tents nearby, and by 1852 he had built a log cabin that became a stage stop. It was called Nolanville. The site was a natural crossroads, as it was located near the spot where La Bahía Road crossed the Brazos River, just south of its fork with the Navasota, both major arteries that led to Navasota. It was also a convenient days ride between Anderson and Washington on the Brazos, once the capital of Texas. By the mid-1850s four stage lines had established stops in the vicinity. The settlement name was changed to Navasota (for the river) in 1854, when a post office was established there.

After September 1859, when the Houston and Texas Central Railway built into the town, Navasota became important as a shipping and marketing center for the surrounding area. Whereas nearby Washington on the Brazos protested the coming of the rails, the old historic town forfeited its geographic advantage, and it began to decline as many of its businesses and residences began a sure migration to the new railhead across the Brazos River at Navasota

The International-Great Northern became the town’s third railroad in 1900, and for the next three decades Navasota continued to grow as a shipping and marketing center for cotton, livestock, lumber, and produce. Its population increased from 3,857 in 1900 to 5,128 by 1930; in 1930, 175 businesses were reported in the town. Though the number of businesses in Navasota declined slightly during the Great Depression, by 1940 its population had grown to 6,138. During the 1940s the town declined as the farms surrounding it were mechanized and consolidated, and by 1950 only 4,976 residents remained. Hoping to reverse this trend, in 1952 local businessmen began to organize the Navasota Industrial Foundation. The foundation, which later drew tax dollars for its support, worked with some success to attract new industries to the area.

The town population stabilized, and by the mid-1970s Navasota had eighteen manufacturers producing mobile homes, furniture, cheese, steel tubing, and oilfield machinery. The population grew from 4,937 in 1960 to 5,026 by 1970 and to 5,971 by 1980. Residents also organized to revitalize the downtown area, and in 1980 Navasota was one of five Texas cities selected for the National Main Street program sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. During the mid-1980s the Texas Department of Corrections built the minimum-security Wallace Pack prison just outside of town. Though many in Navasota had opposed the prison, the facility produced hundreds of new jobs. Many businesses suffered during the late 1980s, when the oil industry collapsed; one employer alone laid off more than 650 workers. Though the new jobs brought by the prison helped to offset some of the worst effects of the economic downturn, city officials again became concerned that young people would have to move elsewhere for employment. In 1990 the census counted 6,296 people in Navasota. The population as of July 19, 2000 was 6,789. Today, Navasota has a population of 7,438.

The industrial sector of the community now boasts 23 companies and approximately 1000 jobs. In 2009, Navasota was selected as a “Visionairies in Preservation” city by the Texas Historical Commission to protect the numerous historical structures in the city. A new municipal building and downtown improvements are planned with completion scheduled in early 2011.

Friendswood, Texas – An Overview

Friendswood City Galveston County is an incorporated residential community on Farm Road 518 twenty-seven miles northwest of Galveston and twenty miles south of Houston in northwestern Galveston and southern Harris counties. The surrounding area was originally wooded. The community was founded after a colony of English Quakers from Kansas moved to Texas and settled in Estacado, Crosby County, in 1880. They found the plains intolerable, however, and sent Francis Jacob Brown, a buffalo hunter and Indian fighter of Quaker heritage, out to locate a colony in South Texas. Brown located a tract of more than 1,500 acres and negotiated with J. C. League for the property in 1895. After a brief time near Alvin, where they disapproved of local customs (which included dancing), a group of three of the original families, including T. H. and Alistus Lewis, acquired land drained by four creeks—Chigger, Cowart’s, Mary’s, and Clear—and named the new settlement in honor of the Friends. The settlers built traditional gabled homes, one of which was used as a monthly meeting place and Sunday school. A post office was established at the community in 1899. Brown set up a sawmill, and pine felled by the Galveston hurricane of 1900 was used to build Friendswood Academy, which graduated its first class in 1907 and served as the local church. Some residents worked in dairying or raised poultry, but the principal agricultural staples were Satsuma oranges, strawberries, figs, and rice, and the Quakers operated several processing plants until costs grew prohibitive. Oil was discovered in the area during the 1930s, and the population subsequently increased; in 1933 Friendswood reported 100 residents and seven businesses. In the 1940s it had a population of seventy-five and two businesses. A new church was constructed at the community by 1948.

Friendswood remained predominantly Quaker until 1958, when a local Baptist church was organized. The community incorporated in 1960. With the location of the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center ten miles away in 1962, many community residents began to commute there or to Houston, and Friendswood became a bedroom suburb. For a time astronaut Donald K. Slayton lived there. On April 8, 1963, the community became the only dry town in the county; at the time, smoking and drinking were already forbidden for local public school teachers. From a population of 1,675 with twenty-six businesses in 1968, Friendswood grew to 13,585 residents and 158 businesses by 1980. It then declined to 10,719 residents by 1982. The number of businesses grew to 315 by 1988. In 1990 Friendswood had 22,814 residents.

Mont Belvieu, Texas – An Overview

Mont Belvieu City Chambers County. The first permanent settler to the area was Amos Barber, a rancher and cattleman who built the first home on the hill in 1849. The community that grew around this homestead was originally called Barbers Hill. However in 1890, the post office chose the name Mont Belvieu as there were other offices with similar names.  After the discovery of oil at Spindletop in 1901, the hill was drilled numerous times without success before 1916. The first commercial oil production at the site began at the Barber’s Hill Oilfield in 1918, and the following year, the Goose Creek and Dayton Railroad was completed through Mont Belvieu. By the end of the 1920’s, large quantities of oil were found at greater depths. In 1930, the first major producing well struck through the salt dome at 5000 feet. The following year, over eight million barrels of oil would be recovered. The Warren Petroleum Company built an underground salt dome storage terminal in 1955. This facility is the largest of its type for natural gas liquids in North America. With 26 underground caverns, it has a total storage capacity of forty-three million barrels of propane, butane, ethane, natural gas and other products.
In November 1985, an explosion occurred which killed two workers and threatened the town over the salt dome. Since then, more effort has been done to get the nearby petrochemical industries to buy out residential homes in the immediate proximity. By 1990, two hundred families were bought out by twelve companies which helped relocate the community two miles to the east.

Winnie, Texas – An Overview

Winnie City Chambers County. The town plat was filed in 1895 by the Gulf and Inter-state Railwayofficials. The town was named after Fox Winnie, a railroad contractor who worked for the line. TheWinnie and Loan Improvement Companyattempted to market small lots of land, but due to poor sales, the company was dissolved in 1911. In 1941 an oilfield was discovered nearby, leading the way for the oil businessman Glenn H. McCarthy to establish a gas plant just east of the town. This development, along with the construction of Interstate 10, would lead to a population growth. The East Chambers County Consolidated School District was established in 1931.

In the late 1800s, two railroad engineers came to Chambers County in the coastal plains of Texas from Newton, Kansas, and left behind more than site surveys. Fox Winnie and H. C. Stowell journeyed to the area where two cities now bear their names to make surveys for the Gulf and Interstate Railway Company (now Santa Fe Railroad). The company decided to build a railroad from Galveston to Kansas City, providing a rail outlet from the Midwest to the Gulf Coast.

About 50 years earlier, the first settlers to the area came from the coast communities of High Island, Gilchrist and Port Bolivar. By 1894, the eastern section of Chambers County was opened to homesteaders. During this time, an economy based on agriculture which thrives to this day was developed, with figs and other fruit crops, cotton, rice and cattle. With the oil boom of the early 20th century in Texas, oil exploration and production came into the area today, the Winnie-Stowell area has its share of oil and oil-related-industry.

A neighborly atmosphere prevails in the two communities, which are linked to the more urban centers of Beaumont-Port Arthur, Galveston and Houston by a modern highway system. Because of its location at the center of this system, the Winnie-Stowell area has justly earned its motto as “Gateway to the Gulf.”

Winnie is the host of the Texas Rice Festival which occurs during the first weekend of October annually. During the TRF, the farmers of Southeast Texas are appreciated, and there are live bands, singers, and a Beauty Pageant that takes place during this time. It starts on the Wednesday before the first weekend of October by a cook-off festival.
