Woodville , Texas – An Overview
The town of Woodville, county seat and commerce center of Tyler County, is intersected by three major U.S. highways 69, 190 and 287. Located in the deep East Texas Pineywoods north of Big Thicket, Woodville is named after George T. Wood, the second governor of Texas. The town and its surrounding areas are full of religious, historic and exciting places to visit and interesting things to do.
Religious landmarks of Woodville include ‘Faith Lutheran Church’, ‘True Gospel Holiness Church’, ‘Whites Chapel Church’ and ‘Woodville United Methodist Church’. About 64 miles from the city is the Beaumont southeast Texas regional airport. On the 85th mile from Woodville is the George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Houston. Other airports in and around Woodville are the Tyler County Airport, Jasper County-bell Field and Hawthorne Field.
Excellent health care facilities are located in the town Woodville and within an hour's drive as well. The health care centers include Tyler County hospital and three nursing homes. Woodville also has several markets, recreational center, and Tyler County hospital school of nursing.
Woodville has an independent school district located in Tyler County. The school district extends into a small portion of Polk County, and comprises a regional school, which is divided into an elementary school (Grades PK-2), an intermediate school (Grades 3-5), a middle school (Grades 6-8) and a high school (Grades 9-12).
Tyler County Courthouse, Heritage Village Museum, and Allan Shivers Library and Museum are some of the notable tourist attractions located around the town. The Heritage Village Museum features an open-air display of replicas of ancient buildings that include church, school, and log cabin. Named after the former Texas governor, the Allan Shivers Library and Museum is situated within a restored Victorian home. Located to the south and west of the town, and about 30 miles north of Beaumont, is the Big Thicket National Preserve. This attraction boasts of being the home of a wide variety of animals that include various species of reptile, birds, toads, frogs, alligators, rare trees, flowers, and plants.
Introduced by Judge James E. Wheat, the “Tyler County Spring Dogwood” festival is hosted by Woodville on three weekends annually. Beginning with the historic heritage village museum arts and entertainment on the first weekend, followed by western weekend that offers a local open rodeo, trial rides parade, and closes with the Dogwood Queens weekend. A parade, arts and crafts downtown, queen’s coronation and historical play are all exhibited and screened on this grand finale. Camping, hunting, boating, fishing and other outdoor activities happen year-round due to the moderate climatic conditions, beautiful woods, lakes and beaches in and around Woodville.
