Port Lavaca, Texas – An Overview

Port Lavaca is the county seat of Calhoun County located on the west coast of Lavaca Bay. Calhoun County is one of the best birding hotspots in the state of Texas. The city of Port Lavaca is better known as the “Port of the Cow”. The coastal town also has some of the best fishing around.  

The county boasts eight birding sites on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. Port Lavaca State Fishing Pier offers swimming, boating and saltwater fishing. The Alcoa Bird Tower and elevated gazebo on the Walkway is a serene place endowed with natural beauty and is great for bird watchers. Visitors can enjoy on a beautiful white sandy beach, lighted fishing pier, picnic areas, waterfront campsites and playgrounds. The coastal city is a migratory flyway for 400 species of birds, and the area is a wintering ground for numerous species, including the endangered Whooping Crane. You can experience a "calmness" sweep through you as you enjoy the cool bay breezes.

Matagorda Bay is famous for bird watching and also includes sight seeing, fishing, boating, horse back riding, photography, hiking and bicycling. Notable locations in Port Lavaca are Lavaca Causeway Marina, Nautical Landing Marina, Calhoun County Courthouse, historic Half-Moon Reef Lighthouse and the LaSalle Monument. Calhoun County Independent School District serves Port Lavaca.

The Calhoun County Museum houses collections depicting the county's early native residents as well as the area's natural and maritime history. Indianola County Historic Park is located on the shores of Lavaca Bay at the site of the old town of Indianola. Parks here offer picnic spots, boating, fishing and camping facilities. Matagorda Island State Park, Port O'Connor King Fisher Beach and Park, Seadrift Bayfront Park, Tilley Park and Fishing Pier Park offer exciting recreational activities to the visitors.
