Port Arthur, Texas – An Overview
The US city of Port Arthur is situated in Jefferson County in Southeast Texas within the Beaumont-Port Arthur metropolitan area. It is located on the western bank of Sabine Lake. The Rainbow Bridge across the Neches River connects Port Arthur to Bridge City. The Port Arthur is on State Highway 87 with the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, which runs past the city, is separated from Sabine Lake by Pleasure Island.
Port Arthur is located on a coastal plain that features both marsh and forest, and timber, water, oil, natural gas and sulfur are among its natural resources. Along with the neighboring cities of Beaumont and Orange, it makes up what is known as the Golden Triangle. The Golden Triangle is adjacent to the Louisiana border, and New Orleans is about 250 miles to the east. Between the points of the Golden Triangle are many smaller communities.
Mardi Gras is one of the largest festivals that are held throughout the year in Port Arthur and Jefferson County. Some of the regular festivities are the Nederland Heritage Festival, the Texas Pecan Festival in Groves, Dick Dowling Days in Sabine Pass and the Texas Rice Festival in Winnie, located seventeen miles southeast of Beaumont.
Museum of the Gulf Coast is a Smithsonian-quality facility in historic Port Arthur that features the early history of the Gulf Coast, pop exhibits featuring music and sport figures from the region, and decorative arts and special exhibits. It is located seventeen miles southeast of Beaumont. There are many area waterways and bays that offer excellent opportunities for the boating enthusiasts. Sabine Lake is a popular spot for windsurfing and fishing enthusiasts.
About 20 miles west of Port Arthur on the Gulf of Mexico, Sea Rim State Park provides beach recreation and camping facilities. The city also boasts of a first-class community park called the Fun Island Depot. Transportation is easy in Port Arthur, and most locations are a 10 or 15-minute drive from the center of town. Port Arthur has many recreational facilities, which includes a Family Fitness Center, a bowling center, and municipal pools and lots more.
Beaumont-Port Arthur, which is five miles east of the Neches River Rainbow Bridge, is a great place for outdoors people, for it has been called a sportsman’s paradise. The area’s moderate climate makes outdoor activity a year-round possibility. The city also has an 18-hole championship golf course called the Palms of Pleasure Island. This is the place where golf is a popular sport activity all year round. Hunting ducks, geese, dove, quail, deer or squirrel, and fishing for a wide variety of fish, fresh or saltwater, can be done within a few miles of the city limits. Public fishing and waterfowl hunting in the J.D. Murphree Wildlife Management Area are really exciting to the people. Sabine Woods is a world-class bird sanctuary located near the Gulf. It is a major migratory path and is a favorite seasonal haunt for serious bird watchers.
Other national parks and forests in the region include Big Thicket, Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, Angelina National Forest, Sabine National Forest, Davy Crockett National Forest and Sam Houston National Forest. Port Arthur residents worship at 148 churches and synagogues representing 25 different denominations and faiths. The South Jefferson County area has four hospitals plus an extensive offering of other medical services. The City of Port Arthur, which is 90 miles east of Houston, is served by the Port Arthur Independent School District. The city area offers education at many different levels, from pre-kindergarten to college. The Texas Education Agency, and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accredit all schools.
