Jasper, Texas – An Overview

Jasper is the county seat of Jasper County, Texas in US. The city is located in the deep east Texas region and is about 110 miles northeast of Houston. Jasper City is well known as the “Jewel in the Forest” for its great natural beauty; abound with forests and lakes.

Angelina National Forest is one of four national parks in Texas and it lies on the Sam Rayburn Reservoir. The forest has five parks namely Bouton Lake, Boykin Springs, Caney Creek, Harvey Creek, and Sandy Creek with campgrounds. The facilities here include boat ramps, fishing, hunting, canoeing, hiking trails, camping and picnicking areas for children to play around and adults to enjoy the beauty of the woods. Ebenezer Park and Twin Dikes Park are also located on the southern shore of Sam Rayburn Reservoir. Ebenezer Park is the only area where horses are allowed. Twin Dikes Park is a camping area and is also home to a multitude of fishing tournaments throughout the year. The city also has James Byrd, Jr. Memorial Park, Caradine Park and Kiwanis Park for the visitors to relieve stress and relax their minds. Beaty-Orton House in Jasper is an excellent example of fine Victorian architecture.

The Jasper State Fish Hatchery is located approximately ten miles north of Jasper. Florida Largemouth Bass, Blue Catfish, Channel Catfish, Sunfish and Rainbow Trout are the five species of fish that breed in this Hatchery. B.A. Steinhagen Lake is located on the Neches River 14 miles west of Jasper. In this shallow lake, there is abundance of aquatic vegetation. Anglers can just hook, trap and gather Crappie in this lake! Martin Dies Jr. State Park on the east shore of this lake attract the visitors for camping, swimming, biking, fishing, hiking, boating and bird watching. Playgrounds in this park offer an enjoyable experience to the kids.

Jasper Independent School District serves the Jasper city. There are many events running all year round in order to focus on the continued growth and development of faith, fellowship and of course to provide fun!
