Huntsville , Texas – An Overview
Huntsville is the county seat of Walker County, Texas, United States. It is situated in the eastern piney woods region of the state. This small town is rich in historical heritage. The city is also known for being the home of Sam Houston, a 19th century American statesman, politician and soldier in the Texan history. As “A Tribute to Courage” the artist David Adickes designed and constructed the Sam Houston Statue. This statue, the world’s tallest one, still stands firmly on a 10 foot sunset granite base, and the statue premises is open to visitors to come and remember this great hero.
A place of historical interest, the Sam Houston Memorial Museum serves to take visitors on a trip down history. The Exhibit hall in the museum houses one of the significant collections of the statuary of John Rodgers in the world. The Museum Complex is the site of the Sam Houston Folk Festival. Sam Houston Visitor's Center and Statue, the Woodland home and the Steamboat House are the other attractions that offer reminiscences of the historic times. The Veterans Museum of Texas honors the veterans by exhibiting memorabilia, artifacts and the history of wars fought in the past. The Texas Prison Museum throws light on the history of the Texas prison system.
Lake Livingston is the second largest lake located within the borders of Texas. Recreational facilities in the lake are camping, boating, fishing, and a lovely park. The park, known as the Lake Livingston State Park, is paradise for the flora and fauna lovers. The Blue Lagoon is a beautiful oasis for scuba divers to discover the secrets of the underwater world. The Huntsville State Park is located next to beautiful Sam Houston National Forest and also houses the 105-mile Lone Star Hiking Trail. The park offers various recreation opportunities such as camping, hiking, biking, nature viewing, and fishing around scenic Lake Raven. The city of Huntsville is served by the Huntsville Independent School District.
