Hempstead , Texas – An Overview

Hempstead is a town in Waller County in the state of Texas, U.S. It is the county seat of Waller located on U.S. Highway 290 at its junction with State highways 6 and 159, fifty miles northwest of Houston. The town offers easy access to the nearby cities and towns with which it shares the Houston metropolitan area. Hempstead is nicknamed the Watermelon Capital of Texas. The city is famous for its watermelon crop and until the 1940s the small town was the topmost shipper of mouthwatering watermelons in the U.S. Amond Holmes was known as the watermelon King and Jessie Mae Braggs was fondly called the Watermelon queen. The town hosts the popular watermelon festival in July, a fest with lots of fun and games

Besides being famous for watermelon production, Hempstead boasts a history of agri-business. Livestock and row crops are also important to the town. Fruits and vegetables are also cultivated here. This pretty town is lush with blossoms of gorgeous native Texas wildflowers on roadsides during spring season. The Peckerwood Garden is situated southeast of Hempstead and offers varieties of rare native plants from Mexico.

The Hempstead Independent School District serves the whole town. This is a public school district offering quality educational services to its students. The Hempstead High is the high school serving grades 9-12, Hempstead Middle serves grades 6-8, Hempstead Elementary serves grades 3-5 and the Hempstead Early Childhood Center is specially meant for students from grades PK-2.

The universities and colleges here are the Sam Houston State University, Rice University, University of Houston, Tomball Community College, Texas A&M University, Blinn College, and the Prairie View A&M University. The chief airport in the town is the Bush Intercontinental Airport. People belonging to different faiths inhabit the town. There are 11 Protestant Churches and 1 Catholic Church in the town. Few of the well-known ones are the Church of Christ, St. Katherine Drexel Catholic Church, Lighthouse Word Church, First United Methodist Church, and Faith United Church.
