Alief, Texas – An Overview

Alief is located within the city of Houston, Texas. A small portion of the area lies in unincorporated Harris County. This tiny portion although comes under Houston's extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ); has its local laws and all other prime services governed at the county level. Alief community was first settled in 1861, when Reynolds claimed 1,250 acres of land at the Bayou Headwaters. The area then went on to be called ‘Dairy’ in the year 1894 by Jacamiah Seaman Daughtery. However, the name was later changed to ‘Alief’ in order to avoid the ambiguities of name similarity with another US city, Daisy.

Hispanics, African Americans and Asian Americans form the major population of the place. Alief was initially a rural community with farms, ranches, general stores, depot, schools and beautiful churches. It grew agricultural products like Corn, Cotton and rice. Cattle were also raised here. Urbanisation spread vastly during the 1970s and 1980s and population quadrupled between 1970 and 1985.

Schools and education have always been of prime importance to the residents here. Alief Independent School District (ISD), comprising 43 campuses, serves most part of the city. It is located in West Houston covering an area of 36.6 square miles and has enrolled thousands of students within it. Many high schools in Alief ISD are assigned by a lottery, which results in the students attending Alief Elsik High School, Alief Hastings High School or Alief Taylor High School.
